12th Fail Review

Probably the best directed movie by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. A true story, told in a simple manner, it was a delight to experience for a little over two hours. Watched on OTT on Hulu over the 2023 holiday period.  Story revolved around a simple, naive and honest man named Manish. His transformative journey from being a chambal boy to an IPS officer, was inspiring as well as a cinematic delight to watch. This journey had all the struggles, yet the man had the integrity to deal with the several adverse situations, the integrity and the self-belief; the biggest gift he had in his genes. Story provides the context of how his father loses his job for not taking the bribe and fighting for this cause with his boss and later with the system.  The lead actor Vikrant Massey finally got a role, and he performed it brilliantly, doing justice to the talent he has. He was ably supported by some of the key characters in the movie.  The female lead is beautiful and she performed her pa...

Dunki Movie Review

Dunki movie - another gem by Rajkumar Hirani. Unique storyline, backed with superlative script, several scenes filled with humor and sprinkled with genuine emotions in his trademark style. The title itself, Dunki, had never heard of before, while we would guess it would have a strong meaning just like the other uncommon name of his another movie 'PK'; the name Dunki was a slang commonly used by punjabi's/Indians for illegal crossing to UK; was a huge surprise in itself. The context itself, the brief history of the punjabi's need in UK post WWII, with the shortage of labor in UK, then a point where this easy and legal immigration was stopped by UK in early 1960s, was an education in itself. With several punjabi's, their  families, extended families already moved to UK, the consequences felt by the locals was explained within first few scenes and created empathy for all lead and supporting characters in the movie The screenplay and direction was crafted with pure ex...

Trip to Maui and Big Island

Image
Trip - 14-Dec-2022 to 20-Dec-2022 For Mrudula, Yash and me, this was our second trip to Hawaii. The previous trip was in Oahu island. This trip was with our close friends Prasad, Aditi and their sweet children Soumya and Sid. Flights from Austin - there is no direct flight from Austin, Dallas or Houston to Maui Island (OGG airport). Its important to search through different travel sites before getting reasonable flight tickets. We were used to searching from expedia or costco. Luckily, got cheaper tickets through Kayak - $417 per person with Delta airlines. Ticket from Austin to Maui was having a stop in Atlanta, but it was still less than half the price that we could get through any means. Still a great deal for the time.   Flights within the Hawaii island - we had reserved a day to see active volcano region in Big island. Big island has 2 airports - KONA (at west) and HILO or ITO (on east side). The tickets to Kona were cheaper, but it 2-3 hrs drive for the volcano private t...
